Circlip pliers, also called snap-ring or retaining-ring pliers, engage the small holes in a circlip so the ring can be compressed or expanded and seated correctly. Internal circlips sit in a bore; external circlips sit on a shaft. The two jobs need opposite jaw action, so internal and external pliers are not interchangeable.
Straight tips suit open, easily reached positions. Bent 90-degree tips reach rings that sit close to a shoulder or inside a recess. Tip diameter, jaw length and overall reach have to match both the ring size and the clearance around it.
